Social Statistics Briefing Room at the White House  
State and County QuickFacts This handy reference resource from the US Census Bureau allows users to access frequently requested Census Bureau information at the national, state, and county level. The site is navigated via a pull-down menu or interactive map, both of which produce tables of facts about the people, businesses, and geography for that state compared to the country as a whole. Another pull-down menu (or map) leads to similar information on the county level (compared to the state as a whole).

FindLaw: Supreme Court Decisions Searchable database of cases from 1893 to the present.
Legal Information Institute / Hermes Searchable database of all cases since 1990, and selected historically significant cases from the years before 1990.
Supreme Court of the United States The site provides general information on the Court, as well as access to the Court's Term slip opinions, Term orders, argument calendar, schedules, Rules, bar admission forms and instructions, case-handling guides, special notices, and press releases. To help navigate the enormous quantity of information an internal search engine is provided.
Legal Information Institute / Hermes: Justice Biographies, Past Justices are listed alphabetically. Links contain a biography of the justice and all the opinions by that justice included in the collection (including concurring and dissenting opinions).

Democracy Network Non-partisan site sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Offers information about state and national elections. Provides citizens, public officials and candidates an unique opportunity to debate issues of local, state and national importance. Citizens can access these statements and compare the positions of the people for whom they are asked to vote. 
Elections Around the World A page of pointers to the latest world wide election news.  Includes election results, referendums, and electoral information.
Federal Election Commission Sections include Citizens Guide to Contributions and the Law; Using FEC Services; Financial Information About Candidates, Parties and PACs; Help for Candidates, Parties and PACs; About Elections and Voting; View Contribution and Financial Reports Filed by Presidential and House Campaigns, Parties, and PACs; and Campaign Finance Law Resources.

Americans with Disabilities Act The Dept. of Justice's site concerning ADA, its enforcement, settlement agreements, and new or proposed regulations.

Capitol Spotlight  

 

A free online weekly newsletter "dedicated to reporting on key votes on Capitol Hill." Each week the focus is on a key vote. Included are stories, interviews, and chats about that week's featured vote.  Votes and party breakdowns will be posted as soon as one hour after the vote is taken. There is also a section of Bills to Watch (bills currently being tracked by CQ Weekly magazine).

FedWorld Information Network  Includes a list of more than 100 US. Government information servers, each sorted by subject categories. It also contains the Government Information Locator Service (GILS), a searchable database of over 7,400 Supreme Court decisions, and a federal jobs announcement database, among others.
FirstGov This site offers users access to all 20,000 government sites (with over 27 million Webpages) from a single central point. The site is designed with novice or beginning users very much in mind. Instead of being organized by government agencies or departments, sites are categorized principally by "interesting topics," such as Business and Economy, Healthy People, and Arts and Culture, among others. Clicking on a topic brings up a page with several featured links and numerous related links to various federal Websites. Users who are searching for specific information will probably have more success using the keyword search engine.

HiCitizen.com This site is designed as a one-stop source for government forms and information for consumers. Considerably more user-friendly than FirstGov, the site is organized by topic (Auto, Business, Moving & Mail, Military & Veterans, etc.) and searchable by keyword.
How Our Laws Are Made  
Library of Congress: Thomas A searchable source for legislative information.
National Archives and Records Administration Sections include The Research Room, which includes NARA's holdings, history/genealogy research and veterans' service records; Records Management, which offers Federal records schedules and records management guidance; The Federal Register, where users can read the official text of Federal laws, regulations, notices and Presidential documents; Archives and Preservation Resources which includes technical guidance concerning archival preservation and management, training for archivists and preservation professionals, and resources for at-home record-keepers, and genealogists.
State Department's Passport Services All you need to know about getting a passport or passport questions.
US State Department Divided into policy, services, regions, and outreach sections.  Site is searchable and provides a guide for new users.
The United States Government Manual The manual offers comprehensive information on the branches of the federal government, departments, offices, and related bodies. The Manual's 690 pages can be retrieved in either text or .pdf format. Each department or office entry is listed separately, and entries include an overview and contact information. Subject and Name/Agency Indices are also included at the end of the Manual.
Travel Warnings and Consular Information Sheets The State Department's list of current travel warnings.  Also offers an alphabetical list of countries with its most recent travel advisory.
U.S. Code  
U.S. Department of Education A wealth of information about all levels of education.  Contains information about financing higher education, helping a child succeed, and education statistics and reports among other topics.

Foreign Governments

Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members of Foreign Governments  Organized by nation.
CIA World Factbook  Data is available for more than 260 countries. For each country, map and flag, geographic, population, government, economic, communication, transportation, military, and transnational issue information is provided for the latest date available.  The World Factbook is widely recognized as one of the finest online resources for quick country information.
Country Background Notes A State Department site which provides background information on countries.  Arranged by geographic region.
Country Studies Sponsored by the Library of Congress.  Site deals with foreign countries, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.  Site is searchable and browseable.
Country Reports on Human Rights Practices These reports are submitted annually by the U.S. Department of State to the U.S. Congress. The reports cover internationally recognized individual, civil, political, and worker rights, as set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Reports are offered for nearly every country, grouped by region.
Foreign Consular Offices in the U.S. Contains a complete and official listing of the foreign consular offices in the United States, and recognized consular officers.
Rulers  This site contains lists of heads of state and heads of government of all countries and territories, usually going back to at least 1900. Also included are the subdivisions of some countries, as well as some international organizations.  Organized geographically or chronologically.
U.S. Embassies & Missions Online Contains links to US embassy web pages around the world.

FindLaw Court Forms At this site, visitors can access over 8,000 forms from United States federal and state courts for free from one easy-to-use location.  The federal forms collection contains court forms for federal appellate, district and bankruptcy courts and the state forms collection contains court forms on topics ranging from adoption to divorce to civil harassment.  All the forms are available in PDF format and are searchable by title or form number.

It contains financial and nonfinancial assistance programs administered by departments and establishments of the Federal government."
disAbility.gov This directory has been created "to provide one-stop online access to resources, services, and information available throughout the Federal government." Includes disability-related information on the following topics: children, civil rights, education, emergency preparedness, employment, health, housing, recreation, income support, technology, and transportation.
Fedforms         This site provides easy access to the forms of the 500 most popular government services. Fedforms is
searchable by title, agency, form number, or keyword.  Includes IRS, social security, small business, passport, immigration, military, and more. 
GPO Gateway  GPO Gateway is a World Wide Web interface to the Government Printing Office's suite of databases. GPO Access databases contain the full text of selected information published by the United States Government. Designed to help citizens easily access the laws, regulations, reports, data and other information provided through the GPO Access system.  Among the growing list of titles available are the Federal Register, the Congressional Record, Congressional Bills, United States Code, Economic Indicators and GAO Reports.
Housing and Urban Development Provides information based on groups of people, such as first time home buyers, or by topic.

This online resource is a functional organization of contacts within the federal government. Its structure mimics the blue pages in telephone directories, but in addition to phone numbers, TTY numbers and Web sites are listed. There is also a database that allows the information to be filtered for local contacts only. An excellent starting point for government information
VA Benefits and Services   This site guides veterans to extensive information about the following benefits and services: burial and memorial (including order forms for headstones), health, compensation and pension, vocational rehabilitation and employment, home loans, insurance, education, and the appeals process. There are many online forms and applications, directories of offices and national cemeteries, relevant legislation, FAQs, and e-mail contacts.
